Red Sox’s Alex Cora Details Past Conversation With Alex Bregman

Alex Cora is committed to Rafael Devers as the Red Sox’s third baseman for the 2025 season.

So if Alex Bregman ends up taking his talents to Boston, it could signal a position change for the two-time World Series champion.

Cora on Saturday did not dive into all the free agency rumors attaching Bregman to the Red Sox. However, when NESN’s Tom Caron asked about the two-time All-Star’s potential fit in Boston, Cora reflected on a conversation he had with Bregman when they were both members of the 2017 Houston Astros.

“Alex was a Gold Glover at third base and we all know that,” Cora told Caron. “In 2017, I had a conversation with him. He needed to play third because it was (Carlos) Correa and (Jose) Altuve. I always envisioned Alex as a Gold Glove second baseman. His size, the way he moves — it felt kind of like, ‘You will be a second baseman.’ But he has played third base at a high level, so we’ll see where he ends up.”

At the outset of MLB free agency, Bregman’s agent revealed the 30-year-old would be open to playing second base. The willingness potentially spiked Boston’s interest, as the Red Sox haven’t had stability at that position since the end of Dustin Pedroia’s career.

It remains unclear how interested Boston actually is in Bregman, though, and there’s a chance the Red Sox are more focused on making a bigger blockbuster move down the road.
