North Carolina, Virginia school delays for Thursday, Jan. 16
COUPLE OF DAYS. IT’S ALL COMING UP. THANK YOU. MICHELLE. STUDENTS IN WINSTON-SALEM, FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE BACK IN CLASS TODAY FOR ONLY THE THIRD TIME THIS YEAR. THE SCHOOL BOARD IS NOW LOOKING AT WAYS TO MAKE UP MISSED INSTRUCTIONAL TIME. SUPERINTENDENT TRICIA MCMANUS SAYS THE BOARD COULD ADD 15 MINUTES TO EACH SCHOOL DAY STARTING JANUARY 27TH OR FEBRUARY 3RD, OR TURN TEACHER WORK DAYS IN THE MONTH OF MAY INTO REGULAR SCHOOL DAYS. STATE LAW REQUIRES 1025 HOURS OF LEARNING TIME DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. DUE TO THE CURRENT MISSED DAYS, ONLY 1000 HOURS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED SO FAR AS I’VE PUT FEELERS OUT, PEOPLE LIKE. AND I’VE JUST TALKED TO SOME FOLKS IN THE ROOM, SOME TEACHERS, AND TODAY WE MET WITH PRINCIPALS TO TALK ABOUT REMOTE PLANS. THE FEEL WAS 15 MINUTES SEEMS BETTER THAN BRINGING KIDS BACK AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. AND SO I AM. WE ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO DO SOME TYPE OF MASS TWO OPTION SURVEY. IF YOU ALL WANT ME TO ASK PARENTS, KIDS, TEACHERS, I MEAN IT. I CAN DO THAT. IT WILL TAKE NOT LONG TO SEND OUT SOMETHING WITH TWO QUESTIONS. DO YOU LIKE THIS OR THIS? AND WE COULD BRING THAT FEEDBACK. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE, SO WE WOULD NEED TO DO THIS AS A REMINDER, THE DISTRICT HAS ALREADY APPROVED MARCH 7TH AND APRIL 21ST AS SCHOOL MAKE UP DAYS. IN CRIME NEWS TODAY, THE MAN ACCUSED OF ROBBING AND KIDNAPING A WINSTON-SALEM GAS STATION CLERK FACED A JUDGE. D’ANGELO TOOMER IS FACING FOUR FELONY CHARGES LISTED ON YOUR SCREEN. HE APPEARED VIRTUALLY WHERE THE JUDGE DENIED HIM BOND AND SAID HE COULD FACE MORE THAN 43 YEARS IN PRISON IF CONVICTED. POLICE SAY ON JANUARY 8TH, TOOMER WENT TO THE SPEEDWAY ON UNIVERSITY PARKWAY, ARMED AND FORCED THE CLERK TO LEAVE WITH HIM IN HER SUV. AUTHORITIES FOUND THEM IN TENNESSEE. SHE WAS NOT INJURED, BUT WAS RESTRAINED IN THE BACK SEAT. INVESTIGATORS SAY THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT SHE KNEW HER KIDNAPER. IN GREENSBORO, UTILITY CREWS ARE WORKING TO FIX A BROKEN WATER MAIN ON BENJAMIN PARKWAY, ONE EASTBOUND LANE IS BLOCKED BETWEEN FAIRWAY DRIVE AND GREEN VALLEY ROAD. WE’RE TOLD THE WATER MAIN BROKE LAST NIGHT. THIS IS VIDEO SHOWING YOU CREWS OUT THERE WORKING. CITY OFFICIALS SAY REPAIRS MAY NOT BE COMPLETE UNTIL 5 P.M. TODAY. DEPUTIES IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY ARE SEARCHING FOR A 79 YEAR OLD MAN WHO HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE MONDAY. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS MAURICE FAIN MAY BE DRIVING A WHITE 2000 NISSAN ALTIMA.
