Heavy winds, floods impact neighborhoods and roads

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Fierce winds and flooding continue to impact the region, leaving thousands of people without power. Early into Sunday, the Virginia Department of Transportation began to receive several reports of downed trees along roads.

From fallen branches to shaky road signs, the weekend storm continues to impact roads and neighborhoods in the area. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, it may be best to postpone driving during the weather event.

Ken Slack with VDOT is urging people to avoid taking non-essential trips if possible.

“If you do have to travel, keep your speed down and be careful as you’re going around a turn or over a hill, because you just don’t know what you’re going to find in the roadway ahead of you,” Slack said. “You could find a stopped vehicle because of a tree down, winds or power lines. Give yourself extra time to react to whatever Mother Nature throws at us.”

After Saturday’s heavy rains, many roads remain flooded, especially in what Slack called low-lying areas. He said to anticipate road closures that may extend into the next couple of days.

If you do encounter a closed road, do not touch any of the signs, cones or barricades. They are safety measures meant to protect you.

“When we do have road closures, especially those flooded roads, we’ll put barricades up. Never drive around a barricade; never move a barricade,” Slack said. “It’s there for your safety, so keep them in place and find a different way to get to your destination.”
