Houston closings due to weather | Courts, hospitals, city services


This week, hazardous driving conditions due to snow and icy roads across the area are expected to impact government entities, businesses, and services.

HOUSTON — An Arctic blast is expected to cause hazardous driving conditions across Southeast Texas this week impacting government entities, businesses and services.

In the Houston area, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch that goes into effect Monday evening and lasts through Tuesday evening. Winter precipitation, including freezing rain, snow and sleet is possible. This could create dangerous driving conditions.

Here are the list of closings or cancelations released so far:

Harris County District Court dockets

Harris County District Courts, including civil, criminal, family and juvenile, are resetting Tuesday dockets. Court proceedings will be rescheduled to a later date. 

Harris County Civil Court in-person proceedings 

Harris County is canceling all in-person proceedings for Tuesday, January 21, due to dangerous road conditions. Those proceedings will be rescheduled. Some online hearings will go on as scheduled.

Harris Health clinics schedule updates

All Ambulatory Care Services’ (outpatient and clinic) facilities will be closed Tuesday, January 21, through noon Wednesday, January 22.

Houston Methodist schedule updates

Houston Methodist is canceling elective surgeries for Tuesday, January 21. If you have a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday, it will be changed to a virtual appointment or rescheduled. All Houston Methodist hospitals will remain open, but clinics, medical office buildings, and imaging centers will be closed Tuesday.

Houston Zoo closed

The Houston Zoo will close on Tuesday, January 21, due to anticipated freezing temperatures and winter weather. If you’ve already purchased tickets for that day, you can reschedule for another day by emailing group.reservations@houstonzoo.org. Latest information on the zoo’s schedule and closures can be found on its website.

Legacy Community Health

Legacy Community Health clinics and pharmacies will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22

METRO bus service

Due to anticipated inclement weather and icy road conditions, all METRO services will be suspended for the evening beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, service plans could change depending on weather conditions.

  • METRORail Red Line will operate from Fannin South to UH-Downtown.
  • METRORail Green and Purple lines are scheduled to operate depending on weather conditions. The Green Line will not operate over the Harrisburg Overpass Bridge; therefore, service to Magnolia Park Transit Center will be suspended.
  • METROLift will face weather-related challenges getting riders to necessary medical appointments. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead as only life-sustaining trips will be provided.
  • Bus and Park & Ride will not operate.
  • METRO HOV/HOT Lanes will be closed.

Customer service will be operational on both Monday and Tuesday.

MD Anderson schedule updates

All MD Anderson Cancer Center locations will be closed for in-person outpatient appointments and procedures on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and Wednesday, Jan. 22. Care teams are reaching out to affected patients. Inpatient operations remain open. Patients can also check their MyChart for updates.

Rosenberg closes city facilities

The City of Rosenberg is closing its facilities on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21. Its City Council meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 23.

Texas Children’s Hospital cancels outpatient appointments

Texas Children’s Hospital is canceling all outpatient appointments on Tuesday, January 21, and Wednesday, January 22. You’ll be notified if a virtual care visit will be provided. You can reschedule through the MyChart app or by calling once the outpatient clinical activities are reopened. More details are available at texaschildrens.org and the hospital’s social media.

UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry closed

All clinics at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, including UT Dentists, will be closed on Tuesday, January 21.

UT Physicians schedule updates

UT Physicians, the medical clinical practice of UTHealth Houston, will be closed for in-person appointments on Tuesday, January 21, and will have a delayed opening at noon on Wednesday, January 22. Patients are being contacted to reschedule or convert appointments to virtual if possible.
