Sarah Hyland and Ryan McCartan in Broadway’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ (Exclusive)

The party’s roaring on over at Broadway’s The Great Gatsby thanks to new stars Sarah Hyland and Ryan McCartan.

PEOPLE has the first look at the two actors in action, as seen in new production photos from the hit stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal 1925 novel. The musical is currently running at The Broadway Theatre in New York City.

Hyland, 34, and McCartan, 31, play Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, respectively — the ill-fated lovers whose tragic romance captures the wild, glamorous excesses of the Roaring Twenties while also exposing the fantasy of perfect love and the downfall of the American Dream.

The roles were originated by Tony nominees Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan when the Marc Bruni-directed show opened in April 2024. She played her last performance on Jan. 30, after he departed on Jan. 19.

McCartan began his run as Jay on Jan. 21, while Hyland premiered in the production on Feb. 10.

The role marks Hyland’s first time back on the boards in nearly 20 years.

She made her her Broadway debut in the original production of Grey Gardens in 2006 alongside Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. The musical earned 10 Tony nominations that season, including best musical.

In 2024, Hyland returned to the New York stage to play Audrey in the long-running Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors opposite Andrew Barth Feldman.

The Modern Family alum also has a tight connection to Paper Mill Playhouse, where The Great Gatsby had its world premiere in 2023. She played the titular character in Annie in the regional theater’s 2002 production.

McCartan, meanwhile, is a staple in the N.Y.C. theatre scene.

He had his breakthrough in 2014 when he originated the role of Jason “J.D.” Dean in the musical adaptation of the cult classic movie Heathers at Off-Broadway’s New World Stages.

The performer went on to star as Fiyero in Wicked and Prince Hans in Frozen on Broadway – reprising his role in the latter on the national tour. His additional credits include Off-Broadway’s Scotland, PA and Lone Star

“Playing Jay Gatsby has taught me how much complexity can lie in even the simplest things,” he tells PEOPLE. “Actually, to me Jay Gatsby is simple: he wants one thing, wrapped up in one woman, augmented by one memory from one summer long ago. I love that he’s larger than life while still being so deeply human, and playing him is an honor, a thrill, and an absolute joy.”

The Great Gatsby tells the Jazz-age tale of mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his obsession over his enigmatic former flame Daisy Buchanan, with scribe Kait Kerrigan adapting Fitzgerald’s book for the stage.

Following its Broadway premiere, the show won the Tony Award for best costume design in a musical in a nod to Linda Cho’s standout work as seen in the photos.

The musical has been a commercial success ever since its debut, with its pop score — featuring music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Nathan Tysen — embraced by a young generation of musical theater fans. Songs include “New Money,” “My Green Light,” and “Beautiful Little Fool.”

Ahead of the musical’s Broadway premiere, original cast member Jordan spoke about the infamous tale being transformed into a musical in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

“After working on this show, I really don’t see how you can portray these characters without singing,” he said. “The stakes of these relationships and the layers of emotions they’re concealed beneath all provide a lush landscape to draw from. And musicalizing these kinds of things unlocks a whole new set of tools with which to tell the story.”

The actor, now set to star in Lincoln Center Theater’s Floyd Collins, added, “You can get much deeper into the minds and hearts of these characters with song, and there is a whole world of new things to explore there.”
