GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — While many major roads in the Triad are clear, side and back roads in certain areas still need attention, which can lead to challenges with school schedules.
Guilford County Schools reported that as of Monday, 30% of county roads were still icy, prompting a remote learning day. On Tuesday, that number is much lower, and a decision on reopening schools is expected soon.
Davidson County Schools were closed today, citing icy conditions. School districts are coordinating with the National Weather Service, NCDOT, and 911 communications while checking road temperatures to ensure safety.
Some parents are frustrated with the closures.
“Hard to pay bills if you can’t go to work so yeah it’s a little frustrating,” one Guilford County parent said.
A parent in Davidson County explained that she’s fortunate to stay home with her two boys however, her high school-aged son is supposed to be taking exams this week and they are now getting pushed back.
One woman says this is a bigger issue than snow and ice on the roadways.
“We need to bring awareness to where the real issues are,” she said. It’s not a school problem; it is an infrastructure problem. We are not prepared for winter weather.”
